She's Here

Ani and Ruby are healthy and happy, and we have all been exposed to radically different worlds than the ones we knew a couple of days ago. The first moment that I saw Ruby’s radiant head was within seconds of the spring equinox. She was officially born about a half an hour later at 11:19 pm on March 19, 2004. The usual stats: 8lbs 10.6 oz, 21 inches tall. She and Ani are the two most beautiful things in the world.

During her first moments on the outside, she looked like a little bit like Peter Lorre in The Maltese Falcon: eyes wide apart, a tiny upturned nose, a small chin that disappeared into her round cheeks, and little wispy dark hairs on her round head.

Ruby moves in slow motion, her arms and legs randomly seeking purchase, like an astronaut on a space walk. I can never tell if I’ve been staring at her face for hours or minutes; I get lost there.
