The End of Another Weekend

I love Thursdays.  Tuesday and Wednesday are tough because I have school in the mornings, and I work in the afternoons and evenings.  That in itself isn’t so bad, because I have some time to myself in between them.  The reason that the middle of the week is so hard is because I only get to see Ruby and Ani for fifteen minutes or so each day.  I groggily steal a baby hug after she finishes breakfast and before I jump in the shower.  She points at my bike helmet as I head out the door and proclaims: “Silly Hat!” That’s all I get until the next morning or in the wee hours of the night.  The house is asleep when I get home from work.  The dogs hardly even acknowledge my return.   I look forward to the inevitable cries at midnight or one a.m., just because I get to hold her close for a minute or two until Ani arrives to soothe whatever it is that needs soothing.  The rest of the week, I pray for sleep, but I’ll take what I can get on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I guess it is obvious; Ruby still has trouble with sleep. Some nights it is bearable, with one or two fifteen-minute interruptions.  Other nights it is very stressful, and it is hard to tell which one of the three of us is crying.  I keep repeating two mantras over and over: “It will get better eventually…” and, “It could be so much worse…” I know these are true statements.  We are going to completely eliminate nursing after Christmas, and I think that will help us avoid some of the late night wake-ups.  It could get worse before it gets better, but it will eventually get better.  If nothing else, she’ll have her own apartment or dorm room in seventeen years.  And there are so many other problems that a child can have.  I would give up all of my sleep to ensure Ruby’s continued health and happiness.

Thursdays lead into Friday and the weekend, and I am so happy with all the time I get to spend with Ani and Ruby.  We go to the park.  We visit grandma.  We go to the river for coffee.  We play in the back yard.  We have pancakes and watch football (actually I’m not as into it this year as I have been in the past; Ani and Ruby the serious football fans in the house; as for myself, I am still an avid pancake fan.)  Today is Sunday, and the midweek blues are gone.  I have more homework than I have time for, but I’ve been compensated with plenty of laughs and kisses.

Ruby Loves Ducks. Here's a movie for ya. You'll need quicktime. I compressed it, so it shouldn't be too tough on the bandwidth. I know what you're thinking: I often don't know what she's saying either, but you have to admit, she's pretty enthusiastic.

Um... Yeah... Ani knits some groovin' hats. To quote Charo, "Fierce, girl."
