*Yawns*

Sorry about the lack of posts lately. I’m still getting the computer tweaked just the way I like it, and working with a decidedly disjointed sleep pattern makes my downtime a little less productive than it used to be. However, I’m getting used to it, and I think Ruby is giving me a little more time to dream than she was a week or two ago. The problem is, I haven’t been able to sleep for any period more than three and a half hours. I don’t think I’m getting that REM sleep that I love so much. There’s lots of research into what R.E.M sleep and dreams are for, and from this layman’s vantage point, that research isn’t all in agreement. I tend to agree at least in part with the theory that dreams are a sort of system reboot for the brain. They help us give meaning and closure to all the loose thoughts that accumulate during a mind’s daily activity. Part of the reason that I think this is that these last couple of weeks, without normal dream and REM sleep, my mind is fast becoming a wasteland of disjointed thoughts. It’s kind of like when you open and close any Microsoft product like Office or Explorer a few times without turning your computer off and on again. Because of Microsoft’s sloppy programming, your memory gets all tied up with the lazy code that sticks in RAM. My mental RAM needs REM.
In my preparental life, I was a sleep hog. I loved to get eight hours a night, and if I could get nine or even the occasional ten, I’d take it. I work nights, and I sleep best in the early morning, just as the sun is coming up. When normal people are stirring to action and the coming day, I am usually just hitting my deepest and happiest sleep.
Ruby is sleeping peacefully now, so I intend to take this brief opportunity to rest my bones, if not my mind. My cognitive self will just have to learn to deal with its confused, crowded, and jumbled mishmash of white noise. Eventually I will be able to r3b007.
